In simple terms, XD stands for Extreme digital picture card which is a memory card used in digital cameras with a size of 20mm x 25mm x 1.7mm. This type of card was originally introduced by Fuji film and Olympus and now other brands like Kodak also have started marketing and selling these cards.

When a person goes to buy a XD card, he has the option to choose from 3 types namely the standard one, type H and type M and the storage capacity may range from 16 MB, 32 MB, 64 MB, 128MB, I GB and 2 GB. With the various options available if he is looking out for the smallest and the lightest card then he is surely going to make the right choice when he buys a XD card because this is so light and it weighs only 2.8 grams and is small as a penny.

When one buys a XD card, he need not worry about the power consumption while transferring pictures to his computer because this picture card has a unique advantage of using very less power and at the same time it is faster when compared to the other types of memory cards like smart media and memory stick. This card has a unique feature of a multi level cell (MLC) flash technology which basically stores a larger amount of data in comparison to a normal single level cell.

This is directly from Wikipedia. Although not the Word of God in everything that this article seems to be reliable: The original xD cards were available in 16 MB to 512 MB capacity. The type M card, released in February 2005, uses Multi Level Cell (MLC) architecture to achieve a theoretical storage capacity of up to 8 GB. In August 2006, Type M cards are available in sizes from 256 MB to 2 GB. However, the Type M suffers more slow speed of reading and writing of the original cards. Type H card, first released in November 2005, offers faster data speeds Card Type M (theoretically Up to 3x faster). Since 2006, the Type H cards are only available in 256 MB, 512 MB, 1 GB and 2 GB of capacity, with 2 GB cards on sale Japan before the rest of the world. [Edit] Olympus says that its type H xD card support special "picture effects" when used in some Olympus cameras software although these features are not inherently hardware dependent. This dependence can be seen as a weak form of the link. However cards H-type new models are needed to capture video at high speeds (640x480x30). Due to changes in the architecture of storage cards, the new type M and H cards may experience some compatibility issues with older cameras (especially video recording). compatibility lists are available for Olympus: Olympus America's and Fujifilm.
