How do I save photos to be under 100KB?
I have a Casio digital camera, an older Toshiba laptop & a Hewlett Packard Photosmart. Not too good at using this stuff, so there is probably an easier way, but we insert the tiny disc from the camera into the Photosmart, then connect the Photosmart to the laptop & download the photos. (We don't seem to have a cord w/end pieces that fit the computer & camera to download directly from the camera.)The photos download ok, in JPEG, but each is over 700KB, which uses up a lot computer memory. Also, I am trying to sell some things & the company that buys wants photos in JPEG & under 100KB if possible. I don't have any photo software & can't buy afford to buy anything. Any suggestions? If so, please give instructions in simple way I can understand. Thanks.
It can be a bit of work without better photo editing software, but Windows typically comes with Microsoft Paint already installed. Look under "Start" / "Programs" / "Accessories".. - Sometimes its burred a little deeper, sometimes its right under "Programs".
Once you have Paint open, open your image and do any cropping of unnecessary or unwanted image info. To crop, you'll want to use the "Select" tools. They can be found at the top of Paint and are named "Free Form Select" and "Select".. Select the area you want to KEEP and go to "Image" and then "Crop"
From there, you'll probably need to just resize the image to be smaller which will also help reduce its data size. - Go to "Image" and "Resize" to start this process. (One thing you want to keep in mind is that you'll probably want to keep the percentages of height and width you reduce at on equal levels or the image will start to skew and give a warped appearance..)
If you make a mistake, just go to "Edit" and "Undo".. - Its also a good idea to use "File" and "Save As" right after making the first change you're happy with so that you're not altering your original.
Usually, for selling items online, most ad photos are going to be under 640x480 which also usually brings them down to under 100KB.
You may want to save yourself even more time than all of this and check your cameras settings to lower the resolution to 640x480 or even lower so that you have smaller image files right from the beginning.
Also, you might want to double-check the software CD that came with your camera. Many times there are scaled-down versions of some of the better photo editing software packages that can save you time over using MS Paint.
Good luck with your sales!
