Digital Camera Memory Drive

Does anyone know how to retrieve images from a digital camera when damaged memory card?
The files were readable before and for some reason are no longer visible. They are still there, but can not be copied or accessed by the computer (via USB port) or on – camera. the camera is a Nikon Coolpix 5600. appearing as a file called G and other files with file extensions. rar told me a camera store that could recover with, but at a high price. Some of the photos can be seen, but about 2 / 3 rds Arent, but still have the memory card from SanDisk 1 Gig. I cannot even drag and drop files on a hard drive to copy the files to create a backup in case this does not file recovery thingy. Does anyone know what to do or have been the same? It could also airport security scanners have caused this? thanks to all who respond!
