My Olympus camera is stuck in view mode, and can’t take pictures! Has anyone experienced (and fixed) this?

My Olympus C-770 UZ (UltraZoom) digital camera has worked great for the last couple of years. Yesterday, it started playing up: it powers up, but stays in view mode all the time. I can see all the pictures already taken on the inserted memory card just fine.
